Hot Bench with Jadie

Hey Jadie! Thank you so much for agreeing to be Hot Benched with us this week.

Of course! What pressing questions does the Law Weekly have for me?

Well, our first question is where are you from?

I'm from Lindon, Utah.

What’s the vibe there?

Well, it's right in Happy Valley. Happy Valley, Utah. There are a lot of Mormons. It's really pretty; I highly recommend Utah to anybody. Skiing, outdoors, everything is amazing. There's a lot of soda shops, you know, the essentials.

Yeah? What's the best dirty soda to get?

This might be a controversial take, but I get a Shark Attack off of the kid's menu, but I replace the Sprite in the shark attack with Diet Mountain Dew. So, it's Diet Mountain Dew and Lemonade and Blue flavour. Blue . . . I think it's blue Curaçao, but I'm not positive. It's for sure blue, though. It comes with a gummy shark.

That sounds perfect for children everywhere.

Yes, and for me. Children and me.

Amazing, alright. Next up! Where did you go to undergrad? What made you come to law school? What’s the story?

So, I went to undergrad at BYU and I studied nursing. I kind of knew going into nursing, that I wasn't planning on being a bedside nurse forever. I knew I was going to go to grad school of some kind. But I ended up working at a small hospital, pretty close to home and close to Provo, where BYU is. So kind of stayed all right within like 30 minutes of each other.

By the time I started looking at grad schools, I was a little bit burnt out of medicine. I graduated at the tail end of the COVID pandemic. So I missed out on a lot of the worst times of COVID, but had to deal with a lot of the aftermath of, not having enough staffing and all of those things. And statistically, the odds are pretty high that you're going to be present for a patient dying, you know. Those kinds of things were really hard for me. Things got kind of heavy and just made me not necessarily want to go the nurse practitioner route that I had kind of been planning on doing when I started nursing school.

And so I started looking at different options. I did an online MBA because I was looking at healthcare administration, that kind of thing. Through the process of doing my MBA, I found out about being a lawyer outside of a courtroom. Litigating did not sound very fun to me, had never sounded very fun to me. But when I learned that there was a lot more different kinds of lawyerings, I realized that might be a good fit and I could work in the healthcare field in legal issues.

Once I found out that existed, I ended up starting the process of applying to law school, blah, blah, blah, UVA was pretty high on my list from the very beginning. My dad actually attended med school here so my earliest memories are in Charlottesville. I was five when we moved back to Utah so I can't say coming back to Charlottesville was coming home. UVA also has pretty solid health law programs that not all of the schools do. So UVA was just up there for me and, and we actually have competent sports teams, which I personally cared about a lot.

Do you have any memory of Charlottesville besides just your house?

I remember the backyard where my dad would take me out. We would go exploring in the woods, and I remember as a child, I was super sure that they were like, truly woods. But it was literally just like the trees out by like Copley apartments.

What's been the best thing about law school?

Oh, my gosh, I just love all of my friends at law school. It's just so much fun. Kelly's the best. You can put that in there. Anyways people here are such high achievers that are still willing and able to take time to enjoy life, have fun with each other. Yeah, just building relationships with friends has been a really important part of law school for me.

Aww, how sweet. Now we have a quick lightning round!

Tell me the best medical show and/or the worst medical show.

The Pitt. Easily the best. It’s new, and season two is currently coming out. Everyone should watch it. Worst? Probably all the ones that are so focused on the relationship dynamics. Not to say that drama doesn’t happen in a hospital, but it doesn’t go down Grey’s Anatomy style.

What's your favorite food?

Beef and broccoli.

Is there a place to get that in Charlottesville?

No, and that's one of the hardest things about being here. Just kidding. There are a few options. Shout out to Peter Chang's. So unfortunate. RIP.

RIP.

No, but I do get Panda Express beef and broccoli in pretty much every airport in between my travels.

Favorite place in Charlottesville?

Probably Main Grounds. I really like the area up by the Rotunda, on the lawn. I just like those nice little outdoor spots that are definitely preserved to be nice little outdoor spots.

I know you’ve been watching the Olympics. What’s your favorite sport in the Winter Olympics?

Skeleton sledding. Apparently, they offer lessons or trial runs up at the Olympic Oval in Utah. It's one of only two places in the U.S where you can, like, train in sledding. So, it's on my bucket list.

Oooh interesting. What about your favorite Summer Olympics Sport?

I gotta go with the classic women's soccer. I just, I love soccer. Javelin is a close second, though. I love watching the people throw their little sticks.

That’s a unique favorite.

Mmhmm.

Alright, last silly question: if you were a legal concept, what would you be?

Anything but torts. Um. I don't know. I feel like you're more qualified to answer this question.

Let's see, let's see. EMTALA.

Literally. I'm like, EMTALA? Is she a legal concept? Would it be funny if I said medical malpractice?

That would be funny.
