Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Last Wednesday, September 24, the Latin American Law Association (LALO) hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in Caplin Pavilion. The event featured tacos catered by Super Amanecer, a huge cake, Latin music, and a game of Lotería. Let’s just say the vibes were ~increíble~.

LALO’s co-Vice President, Chris Begala ’27, shared his excitement for the celebration with the Law Weekly. “At LALO, everyone has their own unique connection to HHM, and so we are always excited to share our combined cultures with the rest of the law school! Tacos and gift card giveaways help too.”

I couldn’t agree more. The tacos were delectable, there was enough for me to get seconds, and Lotería, a Mexican version of BINGO, made me excited for the old folks home. Although I didn’t win or have the satisfaction of shouting “Loterìa!,” I did have a fantastic time looking at the pretty pictures on the game board.

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15. Many Latin American countries celebrate their Independence Days during this timeframe, and September 15 is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence.[1] This month is a time to recognize the significant influence that Hispanic culture and people have had on the United States for centuries.

Two weeks ago, on September 18, LALO hosted Judge David Bernhard of the Virginia Court of Appeals to speak about his experience as the first immigrant and Latino American to serve on an appeals court in Virginia. I’m also told by our lovely Bar Review Reviewers that last week’s Latin Night at Crozet was quite the smash. So keep your eyes peeled for what LALO has in store for the rest of the month!
