Carter Mountain Reflections
On Thursday, September 11, the affinity groups at the Law School made their way up to Carter Mountain Orchard for the Thursday Sunset Series. Students lined the hills, tables, and food truck lines, and even managed to sell out the event! For the incoming 1Ls, the evening of ciders, snacks, and scenic views was a much-needed break from the chaos of the briefing grind and a celebration of their first month of law school. For returning students, Carter Mountain was a beautiful reminder of the free time now available, letting them step away from the Law School halls and enjoy some community bonding.
As someone who has now had the opportunity to be on both sides of the equation, this tradition is well-beloved for a reason. I remember my first time heading to Carter Mountain with my 1L section (shoutout to Section D) and feeling a breath of fresh air for the first time since pre-orientation. The next week, I was there again with APALSA. Seeing so many upperclassmen enjoying the fall weather gave me a sense of hope that life would be calmer . . . eventually.
Now, less than a year later, it felt almost emotional to see all of the new faces and new stories being told. Gathered around apple cider doughnuts and wine, the 1Ls told stories of their first weeks, their professors’ quirks, and the nerves of it all. Somehow the 1L experience felt both lightyears away and moments ago. If you haven’t ventured up the hill yet, I would definitely recommend it. Bring some friends and a blanket to see what Charlottesville has to offer beyond the four corners of the Law School!
