Stop Whining and Start Wining

I am sick and tired of hearing y’all complain about how you only see the inside of the law library, Pav, Ivy, Ellie’s, and the Virginian [colloquially, Virg]. “ChArLoTtesViLLe iS sO smALL, i’M sO boRed!” That sounds like a you problem. I literally lived in New York this summer, and I actually don’t wanna hear it. So for the selfish reason of preserving my peace, I’ve rounded up the best activities in and around good ole C’ville for you.[1] Some of my favorite resources for finding things to do are the C-VILLE Weekly All-Events Calendar, the Wahoo Weekender, and any of the public library calendars (including UVA!). You’d be amazed at all the fun, random, and relatively cheap stuff to do here if you just use your eyes.

Within a 30 min drive:

●      Our Lady of the Angels Monastery. Visit the cheese-making nuns! Free to visit or go home with a $35 gouda wheel. Holy though not hole-y.[2]

●      Florosa. Hosts tea parties on the last Saturday of every month at JBird Supply. $35 per person with vegan and gluten-free options.

●      Scrappy Elephant. It’s like a thrift store, but for craft supplies. Free to look around. Most art classes are $35. They also have classes for children and scholarships for classes. It is a great way to try out new kinds of art without having to buy all the supplies.

●      Botanical Gardens at Piedmont. Free!

●      Leander McCormick Observatory. Free public nights to see the stars on the first and third Friday of the month.

●      Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail. Forget Humpback and Ragged Mountain. Haven’t you ever wanted to walk through some haunted Looney Tunes tunnel for free?

●      McGuffey Art Center. They have a lot of awesome classes like Bachata and Argentine Tango lessons. Free to $15.

●      Swing Cville at Firefly. Free swing dance lessons, no partner required! They have a Halloween event coming up.

●      Sentient Sanctuary. Yoga in the meadow surrounded by chickens, goats, donkeys, and llamas. $30 per person for 45 min yoga + 45 min tour.

●      Cake Bloom. Learn to decorate a mini wedding cake with their Tiny Tiers class for $30. They have reservations on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

●      Montfair Resort. Beautiful nature with lots to do, with free fishing on Wednesdays. You can rent a fishing pole for cheap.

●      Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Museum. Free entrance with occasional workshops and talks. It’s the only museum outside of Australia dedicated to indigenous Australian art.

●      Monticello. Yes, yes, I know. But did you know they have various workshops and demonstrations like the Declaration of Independence printing, plein air painting, wreath making, and an archaeology open house? These events often come with the price of a ticket, and as UVA students, we get one for free.

●      UVA Teaching Kitchen. Free! There’s also a whole bunch of other paid cooking classes around town.

●      UVA School of Architecture. Free workshops! They just had one about designing with plants.

●      Circa or Habitat Store. Peruse for antiques! I got all my 1950s National Geographic magazines from Circa for collaging.

●      Charlottesville Library System. Check out their calendar. They have a bunch of free events like needle-felting hedgehogs or junk journaling.

●      Michie Tavern, ca. 1784 + General Store. Forget about Boylan Heights. I know you want to eat Southern food in one of the oldest pubs in America with folks dressed up in period attire.

●      Carver Recreation Center. They have free roller skate rental and free skating at certain hours on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

●      North American Sake Brewery. They have plenty of wine tours and even a sake tour. Be on the lookout for seasonal stuff like Oktoberfest at Eastwood Farm and Winery.

●      Thistlerock Mead Company has mead and honey tastings and seasonal wildflowers to pick.

●      There are also so many free concerts!

Upcoming Local Events and Seasonal Events to Look For

I know some of these have passed for this year. But if you’re lucky enough to be a 1L or 2L with time left in Charlottesville, keep these in your pocket for next year!

●      King Family Vineyards. Watch a free polo match every Sunday from Memorial Day through the end of October.

●      Chiles Family Orchards. The Fall Into Fun event, live music, pumpkins, and apple picking. September-November.

●      Charlottesville Pride Festival. Saturday, September 26, from 12:30 p.m. to  7:30 p.m.

●      Gordonsville 13th Annual Fried Chicken Festival. Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

●      CASPCA Fall Fest. Adopt a furry friend or see cute animals! Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

●      Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival. October 10-11, and also in May.

●      Apple Harvest Festival at Albemarle Cider Works. Saturday, November 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

●      Winter Wander at Boar’s Head Resort. Wander through a beautiful trail of holiday lights with friends and family! Prices range from free to $25 depending on the ticketholder’s age and the date. Adults can expect to pay $20-$25. Mid-November to January 2, in the evening.

●      Charlottesville Filipino Spring Festival. May.

●      Rivanna River Festival. May.

●      VA (Very Asian) Celebration. (I see what they did there.) May.

●      Fae Festival. June.

●      Cville Sabroso Festival. Celebrate Hispanic and Latin heritage! September.

●      Cville VegFest. Plant-based food festival. September.

Within a 35+ min drive:

●      Queen City Magic & Mischief. Staunton. September 26-27. 40 min away.

●      Fall Fiber Festival & Sheep Dog Trials. Montpelier Station. October 3-October 4. 35 min away.

●      Yoder’s. Visit the petting zoo and feed animals by hand. FREE. The goats even have a 15-foot-high skywalk. 35 min away.

●      Luray Caverns. $36 entrance fee. Trauma bond with your classmates and get lost in the hedge maze while you’re at it. 1h 20m away.

●      Natural Bridge State Park. Free general admission.  Really mind-blowing. The photos don’t do it justice. Get the knockoff LEGO set of the park for a bonus activity. 1h20m away.

●      Massanutten Resort. More than just skiing and boarding. There is also sledding and an obstacle course. Pay per activity + rentals. 1 h away.

●      Downtown Staunton. Antique stores and more. 40 min away.

●      Buc-ee’s. Brisket, gas, and clean bathrooms. What more could an American want? 50 min away.

●      Virginia Fantasy Festival. There’s even glass blowing and blacksmith classes. Hopefully, no AI slop 3D-printed dragons, though. May. 35-45 min away.

●      Civil War Reenactments. Laurel Hill. October 3-4. 3 h away; Battle of Cedar Creek.  October 17-18. 2 h away.

●      Fossil Hunting and Rockhounding. Various locations. CHECK THE RULES AND LEGALITY AT YOUR LOCATION!

●      Colonial Williamsburg. 2 h away.

●      Pawpaw Festival at Powhatan State Park. Try Virginia’s state fruit! September. 1 h away.

Anyway, I have done my civic duty. Leave your apartment. Leave the library. Now stop bugging me and go somewhere else.[3]
