Bar Review Review: LSL Hoedown Roundup
Dearest gentle law student,
Still recovering from the minor aches and pains stemming from a couple too many rounds on the bull on Saturday? Yea, us too. Let's not get too ahead of ourselves though. This week brought yet another round of everything future lawyers love—kegs and bull. Let's round up this week, shall we?
This week’s social scene (excuse to drink) started at the LALO x SBA “Kegs y Calor” event on Wednesday, which kicked off this semester’s (hopefully more frequent) Kegs in Spies. This generation of law students (authors included) never experienced the time pre-COVID when licensed caterers were not required to enjoy a nice beer on law school grounds, and SBA is on a mission to change that. How else will law students network with the UVA Law Alumni if we can't talk about the similar ways in which we consumed alcohol in school (I'm looking at you, Das Klüb). Anyways, despite the barriers, Wednesday's event had a great turnout, with empanadas gone within the first fifteen minutes and lots of cider and beer to go around. Don't think we didn't note the suspicious lack of 1Ls who probably were busy pumping out their first LRW Memo. They don't yet know that the ultimate hack to reaching a flow state is (at least) one beer. They'll learn, they'll learn.
After Wednesday, there was an unusual break in the schedule for most law students, as Bar Review was foregone this week to maximize the rootin’ tootin’ Texas-sized turnout for the Lone Star Lawyers Hoedown on Saturday. What did they do in the meantime? Well, some attended Thursday Sip (see last week’s for a refresher on what that was). Some attended Nelly’s on Wednesday (shoutout APALSA for bringing that back). Most had a couple beers at home on Friday. For the rare few of you who probably went to Miller’s in between, look in the mirror and ask yourself: Is everything really okay?
Now, to break down the glory that was Saturday’s darty, we are going to start with a game of High Low Buffalo. Starting with highs, obviously: the bull and those who rode it. Kudos to those who scored above twenty seconds, and nice try to those who didn't quite make it to that magic number. It was clear who the real riders are. Another high was definitely the debut of The Afters, the musical DJ duo of SBA members Tyler Stapleton and Nayan Brahmbhatt. They mixed a surprisingly more-than-decent sounding country lineup that slowly evolved into a banger house set—highlights included a hardstyle remix of Sweet Caroline and the . . . NFL Draft theme? They made it work, spectacularly so. Finally, another high was the fashion. Coming off a pretty tame Bar Review theme, this one played right into the staple of every Charlottesvillian closet—cowboy boots. With cute cowboy hats in tow, the people of the law school showed that they could throw down at the hoedown.
Now for the lows. While the Texas-sized tab was certainly gracious (thanks, Sidley and sponsors), it running out in the first hour was unfortunately a low. It also speaks, a bit menacingly, to how many pitchers and buckets less than a third of the law school can order in an hour. Can someone run those numbers? Another low was the bathroom lines. Crozet’s one downfall is the surprising lack of bathrooms for its honestly large space. Finally—an ode to the lost pair of sunglasses. Whether they were the $5 Pit Vipers or the fancy new Ray-Bans, everyone knows someone who lost a pair this weekend. Stay strong y’all.
Now for our buffalo—we are excited for LALO’s infamous Latin night this coming Friday. We expect to see some hips that, in fact, do not lie. Until then . . . signing off.
